Copper Thread Forest

This large scale hand embroidered artwork was commissioned for a private interior project. Developed and produced in my studio between April and September 2020 and taking almost 600 hours to complete, this forest inspired piece was created a magical addition to a clients master bedroom, brining the essence forest surrounding the property inside.

Taking inspiration from the woodland paintings of artist Richard Cartwright, I worked closely with the interior designer and one of the UK’s last remaining metal thread makers to explore how a variety of copper threads could capture the feel of branches, vines and trunks, combining to create a scene of seven trees, each with their unique personality.

This piece demonstrates how one technique - in this case couching, where a metal thread is stitched to the surface of the fabric - can provide a wealth of possibilities the more you allow your imagination to run wild!
